Pokemon Black/White Walkthrough - Basic Badge
Striation Gym
Once you have obtained the Trio Badge and TM83 (Work Up), leave the Gym.
Striation City
As you leave the Gym, Fennel, one of the scientists residing in Striation City, will stop you and take you to the second floor of her house. She will give you HM01 (Cut). This lets you cut down small trees out of battle (because of the Trio Badge), like the one in the Dreamyard.
Fennel will then you that she wants some Dream Mist from Munna so she can fix the Game Sync machine. Munna is found in the Dreamyard.
Go to the Pokemon Center and heal up, then go to the Dreamyard.
Dreamyard

Firstly, you'll have to teach a Pokemon the move Cut. Your starter may be able to learn it; if not, your simian can. I think. Once you teach it, find the small Cut tree blocking your way further and cut it down. Once you try to go through the hole in the wall, Bianca will come and speak with you, then go forward some. Go past here to hear a noise. Walk up and thorugh the doorway to find Munna, the Pokemon Fennel was looking for, sitting in the open.
When you get close enough, Bianca will come and the Munna will run off. The two of you follow it, then some Team Plasma Grunts will show. The Grunts begin to abuse the Munna, so you then battle them (one at a time).
___________________________ | BOSS: Team Plasma Grunt \ |____________________________\_______________________________________________ | Pokemon: Patrat (Lv. 10) Normal | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | It is weak to Fighting and immune to Ghost. Again, like it matters. Your | | Pokemon -- starter or simian -- can deal with this. | |____________________________________________________________________________|
You'll then have to battle the other Grunt.
___________________________ | BOSS: Team Plasma Grunt \ |____________________________\_______________________________________________ | Pokemon: Purrloin (Lv. 10) Dark | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | It is weak to Bug and Fighting and immune to Psychic. Again, just use | | your starter or simian Pokemon. | |____________________________________________________________________________|
Once that Grunt is dealt with, you'll listen to some banter. Soon afterwards, Ghetsis, a man of authority in Team Plasma apparently, will teleport in, soon followed by another ... and another appears behind the Grunts. They run off and Ghetsis leaves.
A Musharna soon comes from around the corner. Fennel, the scientist from earlier, also comes in and notices Munna and Musharna, both of which who leave soon. It is soon determined that Musharna made an illusion of Ghetsis appear earlier, using the Dream Mist, to save Munna. Some of the Mist is left behind and Fennel snatches some, returning to her lab in Striation. Bianca then proceeds to speak with you.
After this, you can find some items. Go west and under the walkway. In the grass nearby, you'll find a Poke Ball. Near the hole in the wall near the bottom of the staircase, you'll find a Parlyz Heal. Go up these stairs and right to find a Repel. Return to the staircase's apex and go left to find a Potion.
Once you're done item-hunting, return to Striation City.
Striation City
Go to the Pokemon Center and heal up. Exit and go to the easternmost set of buildings and enter the northernmost one of them. Go to its second floor. There, speak with Fennel to receive the C-Gear.
This object can use wireless, Wi-Fi, and infrared/IR connections for various reasons. Infrared can let trade/battle with other real-life people a short distance away. Wireless lets you use the Entralink and the Xtranceiver (for talking and such). Wi-Fi will let you sync your game with the Pokemon Global Link website.
A note about this: Even when you are not using it, the C-Gear is going to constantly search for Wi-Fi connections. Doing so will quicken how fast the DS/3DS battery dies (which is bad enough as it is for the 3DS). If you have no reasons/plans to use the C-Gear, just turn it off. Additionally, try to not to use it in airports (messes with navigation), hospitals (messes with equipment), or within a couple of feet (~0.6 meters) of a pacemaker (a bad idea).
After receiving the C-Gear, you'll be given the Pal Pad. Like with D/P/Pt/HG/SS before it, you can record other people's Friend Codes/FCs in here. This lets you trade/battle with them specificly over Nintendo WFC. You can record them manually or by using the C-Gear's infrared stuff.
Finally, we can leave. Go west of the city to the fountain, then go north onto Route 3.
Route 3
____________________________________________________________________________ | Pokemon | Pokemon Type | Level Range | Encounter Method | |----------------+----------------------+---------------+--------------------| | Patrat | Normal | 8 | Grass | | Purrloin | Dark | 9 | Grass | | Audino | Normal | 8 to 11 | Grass (shaking) | | Blitzle | Electric | 8 to 11 | Grass | | Lillipup | Normal | 9 | Grass | | Pidove | Normal/Flying | 8 to 11 | Grass | |============================================================================| | Trainers' Pokemon: Lillipup Lv. 10, Munna Lv. 10 | | Pansage Lv. 10 | | Pansear Lv. 10 | | Panpour Lv. 10 | | Purrloin Lv. 10 (x2) | | Patrat Lv. 9, Pidove Lv. 9, Lillipup Lv. 9 | |____________________________________________________________________________|
As you enter Route 3, you'll find a staircase. Walk up it to find two buildings and a playground to the left. The building on the right is the Pokemon Daycare. Here, you can drop off one or two Pokemon for the people there to raise. For every step you take while the Pokemon are there, they will gain 1 EXP. They automatically level up and learn moves. Also, if you leave two Pokemon (a male and female there) there, you may be able to get eggs. Please note that some Pokemon, despite being of a gender (eg. Latias, Latios), cannot breed.
The building on the left is a preschool. The person nearest the doorway will restore your Pokemon's HP/PP/status for you if spoken to, like a Pokemon Center. That's pretty much that all inside.
To the left of the preschool is the children's playground. As you enter, you'll have to battle a Nursery Aide. After the battle, head over to the northwestern corner of the sandbox and go one step right and two down. Press A to find an Ultra Ball.
Now, aside from that, we can battle the kids here. One is next to the slide's stairs. There are also two Preschoolers to the south of the slide; they will battle one at a time.
That'll be it for this portion of Route 3. Heal up inside the preschool and descend the stairs. Go west and you'll fight your first double battle. These "double battles" were introduced with the GBA Pokemon games Ruby and Sapphire Versions (also known as the third generation or Gen. III). These battles are two-on-two and usually require you to supply two of your Pokemon. The Pokemon initially sent out are the top two on the list (skipping eggs and KO'ed Pokemon). During these, either of your Pokemon can attack either opponent. Each Pokemon gets a turn. Some moves, such as Surf and Earthquake, can affect both of the opponents, sometimes including the user's partner. So be careful with what you choose.
Anyhow, return to the preschool to heal if you got too damaged, then continue west past where you had the double battle. As you go forward, you'll find Cheren and will battle him.

After you defeat Cheren, you'll see two Team Plasma Grunts run past, soon followed by Bianca and a little girl. It seems that those Grunt stole the little girl's Pokemon. Obviously, you'll need to get it back. After the talking is over with, Cheren will off to the west to chase the Grunts down.
When you regain control, go into the nearby patch of grass to get the Super Potion. The Super Potion heals 50 HP of a Pokemon, much like a Fresh Water. Go and heal up at the preschool if you need to, then go west to where Cheren went. Continue west until you bump into a wall, then you'll need to go north. You will find Cheren in front of a cave entrance. Ignore this situation for the moment and go east through the grass. You'll find a Pokemon Breeder to battle there, who will give you an Oran Berry upon her defeat. Go south to find a Repel. Return to Cheren's location and speak with him, responding "yes". He will go into the cave. You should follow suit.

When you are ready, walk to the two Team Plasma Grunts. Some talking, and there will be a quick battle.

After this, there will be a quick scene and then two more Grunts come. This battle will be a double battle, with Cheren being your partner. With situations like this, when you have a partner, you cannot control their actions or Pokemon at all.

After winning the battle, there will be a bit of talking. During this scene, the Team Plasma Grunts will give you the girl's Pokemon and flee. Cheren leaves to give the girl her Pokemon back.
Once you regain control, go west in the cave and follow the path around to the item, TM46 (Thief). That'll be all for here; exit the cave and return to Route 3.

Go back east to Bianca and the little girl. As thanks for returning her Pokemon to her, the girl will give you three Heal Balls before Bianca takes her away. On the Heal Ball... A Heal Ball is almost the same as a regular Poke Ball, as far as catch rate (1.0x) goes. However, upon successful capture, the captured Pokemon will be fully healed: HP/PP and status. That is the only difference, as it doesn't affect it otherwise. Another note: if you have six Pokemon (eggs included) in your party and capture a Pokemon with one, it would have been a wasted ball: if you have six Pokemon, a captured one is sent to the PC, and Pokemon in the PC are automatically healed.
Anyhow, you can now travel to the south. As you do so, you'll encounter and battle a School Kid. Defeat him and go into the patch of grass to the east and you will find an Antidote. Further south, you'll find Cheren. You'll be warned of the taller, darker-green grass, as it can sometimes cause wild double battles. These are like regular double battles, except you can catch the Pokemon. There is only one catch: if both the opposing Pokemon aren't KO'ed, you can't try to capture, as it is tough to aim with both of them around. You will therefore need to KO the one you don't want. Additionally, the grass can SOMETIMES produce additional species not in the other lighter grass.
*coughs* Anyhow, continue southward to battle another School Kid. After the battle, continue along the path. When you get to the bridge, go south and through the grass. You'll find a Great Ball in there. Return to and go across the bridge. As you do, you'll have to battle another School Kid.
Once across the bridge, you'll find an Awakening (Sleep status restorative). Further along is another School Kid. Battle and defeat him, then go through the gatehouse in Nacrene City.
Nacrene City
When you enter, go west a few steps and you'll meet up again with Cheren. He will walk you over to the Pokemon Center, and also give you 3 Chesto Berries. These items can cure the Sleep status, and will do it automatically in battle if they are held.
Anyhow, go into the Pokemon Center and heal. Do some shopping if desired. Then exit and go into the building to the west of the Center. There, you'll find a shop that can sell stat-boosting items like X Attack and Dire Hit. I personally don't use them a lot, but some people find them useful. Anyhow, go into the building to west of this building and speak with the blue-haired woman. You can be given an item based on your choice:
O------------O-----------------O------------------------------------O | Choice | Item Received | Item's effect when held | O------------O-----------------O------------------------------------O | Snivy | Miracle Seed | Grass moves do 20% extra damage. | | Tepig | Charcoal | Fire moves do 20% extra damage. | | Oshawott | Mystic Water | Water moves do 20% extra damage. | O------------O-----------------O------------------------------------O
Of course, you'll want to choose your starter, although another option that may work is choosing the Pokemon that is the type of your simian Pokemon. It is based on choice, after all. It won't matter though: you'll eventually get all three of these throughout the course of the game.
Exit this building and go into the building two buildings east of the Pokemon Center. On the upper floor, you can do a trade:
O----------------O-------------------O--------------------O | Game Version | Pokemon Desired | Pokemon Received | O----------------O-------------------O--------------------O | Black | Cottonee | Petilil | | White | Petilil | Cottonee | O----------------O-------------------O--------------------O
This trade is rather important. See, Cottonee is exclusive to Black, and Petilil is exclusive to White, both being excepted by trading. Seeing as you can't actually get the Pokemon you're trading for otherwise, it is a very good idea to try the trade. Another thing to note is that Pokemon with a different ID No./Secret ID than you will get more EXP. than normal. Of course, neither are exceptional additions to your team, and you'll see them later on from other trainers in the game, so it's your choice. On a side note, they both can be caught inside Pinwheel Forest, a place just to the west of Nacrene.
*whew!* After you're done there, go northwest of the Pokemon Center and you will find a cafe. On Wednesdays, you'll be given a Soda Pop (heals 60 HP, I think) by talking to the front waitress. Regardless, go to the accordian player outside. Stand in front him, go one step down and two right. In this space is an Ultra Ball; press A to get it.
Now then, the big grayish building in the north-central part of town is the Nacrene City Museum/Gym. As you try to enter, N will walk out and he will wish to battle you.
________________________ | BOSS: PKMN Trainer N \ |_________________________\__________________________________________________ | Pokemon: Pidove (Lv. 13) Normal/Flying | | Tympole (Lv. 13) Water | | Timburr (Lv. 13) Fighting | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Pidove are weak to Rock, Ice, and Electric. They are immune to Ground and | | Ghost moves. Nothing exceptional here; your Fire/Water simian/starter | | will function better the Grass-type here. | | | | Tympole is weak to Grass and Electric. This one likes to confuse you. To | | heal this, just switch the Pokemon for instant healing. If possible, use | | your Grass type, but DON'T use your Fire type. | | | | Timburr is weak to Flying and Psychic. This one is somewhat more powerful | | compared to most Lv. 13's, but isn't special otherwise. | | | | Recommendations: Your starter and simian Pokemon each at Lv. 15+. | |____________________________________________________________________________|
When you defeat N, who will then leave, ignore the museum for now. Why? Well, now, if you go to Pinwheel Forest, you can (A) train your Pokemon and (B) get a Fighting-type TM, which this place's Normal type Pokemon are weak to. So heal up at the Pokemon Center and leave to the east.
[Outside] Pinwheel Forest

On the "Black/White" denotations: whenever a Pokemon has one of these beside or otherwise near its name, this Pokemon is only available in that specific version. This was resultant of me forgetting about the old "Version" column in my formatting until this point, though I doubt I would have had room for it anyhow. If the version isn't stated, it is in both Black and White versions.
Speaking to the first woman you find on the route yields TM94 (Rock Smash). It was once an HM for previous games and is an okay Fighting-type move. It is also the last-numbered TM in the game (excepting the unreleased-item-based-event TM95). Fighting-type Pokemon will get an additional 50% power boost from using this move, and, when used on Rock/Normal/Steel/Dark/Ice types, will deal an overall triple the normal damage. Several Fighting-types can be found around here, so grab one if you can. I will pretty much put it as a recommendation for some of the boss battles, and I recommend catching Sawk over Throh. Of course, either should work for the strategies.
Anyhow, continue to the east and then south to find a Nurse to battle. After this battle, she will heal your Pokemon for you, as well as every time you speak with her. Then along the path between the fence and the trees to find an Ether, which restores 10 PP of a Pokemon's move.
Return to and go south of the Nurse to find a Preschooler to battle. Another one to battle is nearby. Continue down the tracks from him and you'll find a Great Ball.
Continue further south and through the grass. Battle the Youngster nearby and grab the Antidote to the south. Then go southwest and into the double-battle grass to find a Super Potion. Continue eastward and battle a Youngster. Ascend the nearby stairs and battle the Black Belt and Battle Girl up here, which will be the last two trainers you find around here.
Go to the nearby big rock and examine it to find a Star Piece. Star Pieces are these items that can be sold for a lot of money at Pokemarts, and for even more if you find a maniac. You can get one Star Piece here every day. Walk down the second staircase nearby to find a Net Ball. This provides a higher catch rate (versus a normal Poke Ball), but only if it's used on a Water or Bug type.
Anyhow, when you're done, continue back to the Nurse and get healed. Continue east back into Nacrene City.
Nacrene City
Go to the Pokemon Center if your Pokemon aren't healed yet, and buy some Potions if you want to. Then go north into the Museum/Gym.
Nacrene Museum/Gym
Inside, you'll find a scientist looking at a skeleton of what is (most likely) a Dragonite, a Pokemon resident of the long-off Kanto and Johto regions. You will be escorted around by him to look at some of the Museum's exhibits, such as the skeleton and the meteor (I guess that if you import a Deoxys, you can change Forme there). You'll be shown to the Gym Entrance. Head on inside.

Once you enter, you will be given another Fresh Water by the white-haired person. Go forward and battle the School Kid.
Now, for the Gym puzzle. Go to the bottom-left bookshelf and onto the stepstool so you can inspect the book. Do so and answer "yes."
Then go to the middle-left bookshelf and read the book there. Then go to the top-left bookshelf and tell the person there "yes" to battle. After this, you can go up and read the book. Do so...
... and then go to the bottom-right bookshelf and read the book there. Then go to the middle-right bookshelf and say "yes" to the girl there to battle her. After the battle, she'll move away from the bookshelf. Inspect the bookshelf to find and activate a switch, letting you downstairs. Go down there to find Lenora, the Nacrene City Gym Leader. You may want to return and heal at the Pokemon Center, then return. Speak with her to begin.
___________________________ | BOSS: Gym Leader Lenora \ |____________________________\_______________________________________________ | Pokemon: Herdier (Lv. 18) Normal | | Watchog (Lv. 20) Normal | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Both Pokemon are weak to Fighting and immune to Ghost. After this battle, you are given the Basic Badge and TM67, Retaliate. As said earlier, Retaliate will do more damage if a teammate is KO'ed on the previous turn.
