Pokemon Black/White Walkthrough - Trio Badge
Once you start the game and watch the opening scenes, then select "New Game", you can be given an explanation of the Pokemon world. The Professor telling you of it is Professor Juniper. She's the first in-game female professor actually! Anyhow, after you select your gender and then your name, the camera will swoop into your house as Professor Juniper enters ...
Nuvema Town
Your character will be inside your room, which is upstairs (as always), with your friend, Cheren. Bianca, another friend, will soon enter and the three of you focus on the present on the table. It contains your three starter Pokemon of the Unova region.
~~ Snivy, and all three of its evolutions, are of the Grass type. They are weak to Fire, Flying, Ice, Bug, and Poison. You'll have trouble going for the third, sixth, and seventh badges if you pick this Pokemon, although you will have an advantage in the fifth gym. Generally, this Pokemon is good for a challenge play, because the type-coverer you'll get later only helps cover one of the five weaknesses and provides no direct advantage in the Gyms, except the first (which is mandatory).
~~ Tepig is of the Fire-type. It is weak to Rock, Water, and Ground. Its evolutions are Fire/Fighting, and add the weaknesses of Flying and Psychic while neutralizing the Rock weakness. Tepig itself will do good in the third and seventh Gyms, while having trouble in the fifth. The evolutions will have additional advantages in the second and seventh (yeah, dual-advantage) while having trouble with the sixth. The type-coverer later on will help out in the fifth gym, and it covers the Rock/Ground weaknesses. I would use this Pokemon for a somewhat-easy playthrough.
~~ Oshawott is of the Water-type. It is weak to Grass and Electric. It'll have problems in only the seventh gym. The type-coverer will help cover the Grass weakness. So, generally, this Pokemon will help you learn the basics of the game and is best for beginners.
After this, Bianca, then Cheren, pick their Pokemon, which are determined by what YOU picked.
O-----------------O-------------------O------------------O | You picked... | Bianca picks... | Cheren picks... | O-----------------O-------------------O------------------O | Snivy | Oshawott | Tepig | | Tepig | Snivy | Oshawott | | Oshawott | Tepig | Snivy | O-----------------O-------------------O------------------O
The general idea is that, if all battles would be starter-only, you'd have the advantage over Bianca, while Cheren would have the advantage over YOU. (And Bianca would have the advantage over Cheren.)
After this, Bianca will challenge you to a battle.

After the battle, win or lose, Cheren will heal your Pokemon and challenge you to another battle.

After you win/lose, you can go and walk around, ignoring the mess. Go downstairs to find Bianca and Cheren speaking with your mother. Your mom will say that she'll clean up the mess, then will give the cross-transceiver (seen as Xtranceiver in-game). Now, leave the house.
Outside, Bianca will go south into her house to speak with her parents. Her house is the southwestern one; Cheren's is the southeastern one; your is the central one; and the Pokemon Lab is to the northwest. Go into Bianca's house to find her being yelled by her father. She'll leave and you'll then to go to the Pokemon Lab, where Bianaca and Cheren already are. Speak with Cheren and all three of you will enter the lab.
Inside, you'll be given a Pokedex. This item can document data on all 156 Pokemon of the Unova region, and, later on, all 649 Pokemon in the world. You will also get a chance to nickname your starter Pokemon.
After the professor leaves, walk outside to have a talk with your mother, who will give you the Town Map. This shows the map of the Unova region, which is rather hexagonally shaped, isn't it? After this, you should now to Route 1, the entrance to which is northeast of town.
Route 1
____________________________________________________________________________ | Pokemon | Pokemon Type | Level Range | Encounter Method | |----------------+----------------------+---------------+--------------------| | Lillipup | Normal | 2 to 4 | Grass | | Patrat | Normal | 2 to 4 | Grass | | Audino | Normal | 2 to 4 | Grass (shaking) | |============================================================================| | Trainers' Pokemon: There are no Trainers to be battled here. | |____________________________________________________________________________|
Firstly, on the above table. This details stuff about Pokemon encounters. I haven't had the time to find the precise %s, so I did away with that. I kept the Pokemon name and the encounter method. The latter describes how to find it; it may be an action (Surf), place (Grass), or an item (Super Rod). The Pokemon type was added since my HG/SS FAQ, as was the level range. The former is easy to figure out; the latter describes the minimum/maximum levels this Pokemon is known to be found at. As for the "shaking" notation on Audino (and others, later on), the grass in this game can shake around some. Thusly, this Pokemon IS found in the grass on the route, but only the shaking grass tiles. Similar notations will be given in places such as watery areas and caves.
Another thing that has stayed since my HG/SS guide was the Trainers' Pokemon. I don't really like having my charts take up so much room as they did with my D/P/Pt guides, so I reduced the Trainers' section to just Pokemon species and levels; no strategies. I do note whether there isn't a single Trainer on the route; same for wild Pokemon. (Of course, if both are absent, the chart isn't placed.)
Anyhow, once you and your friends walk north onto Route 1, you'll Professor Juniper. She'll show you how to catch a Pokemon, which isn't a bunch of jumping like in HG/SS (the first time, anyhow). You'll then be given five Poke Balls. The idea of catching Pokemon is to first lower its HP as much as possible, preferably into the red. Then you should try to put a status on the Pokemon; the best tend to be Paralysis and Sleep. After that, throw a Pokeball. Many types of Pokeballs exist, some having extremely high catch rates.
*coughs* After the Professor leaves and you are free to do as you wish, Cheren and Bianca decide to have a contest on who can catch the most Pokemon on the route. There are only three on the route, so you may want to try your hand at it anyhow. The contest has no reward, but, as a note, both Cheren and Bianca will have two Pokemon total (their starter and another, which Cheren doesn't seem to raise, but Bianca does).
While you're on Route 1, be sure to speak with the dark-haired girl in the grass; she'll give you a Potion. A Potion is an item that restores a Pokemon's HP by 20 (or less, if it has lost less than 20). They can commonly be bought at the shops in Pokemon Centers or as items on the routes. Anyhow, catch all you want for now.
When you walk to the top of the route and tell Cheren and Bianca you're done with the route, you'll also get a call from Professor Juniper, which turns into a four-way call. After it, go north into Accumula Town.
Accumula Town
The first building you'll find is the Pokemon Center, where you'll also find Professor Juniper. Speak with her and she'll teach you everything about the Pokemon Center, whether you want/need her to or not.
On the ground floor, beside the computer, is the healing center. Speak with the nurse there to heal the status, HP, and PP of the Pokemon in your party. You also get notified when your Pokemon have Pokerus, a good unhealable status. By the blue counter is the Pokemart, which is now in the same place as the Pokemon Center. Its functions are the same - buy and sell items. You should buy some Potions here. Upstairs is the Wi-Fi Center, where you will find the compacted versions of the various wireless/Nintendo WFC functions from the previous games. The PC downstairs can store/withdraw the Pokemon from storage (which is currently at a max of 240, I believe), get a Pokedex rating from Prof. Juniper, access your PC mail, and, later on, see your various records (Hall of Fames, for example). On a side note, Pokemon stored in a PC are fully healed (except for Pokerus), unlike R/B/Y/G.
When you're ready, leave the Pokemon Center and you'll find a commotion to the west. Go west, towards the crowd, where Cheren will stop you. Team Plasma is up on the hill, speaking about liberating Pokemon. Team Plasma is much like the Team Rocket (R/B/Y/G/G/S/C/HG/SS) and Team Galactic (D/P/Pt) of the previous games - they are a bad team (opposite of what you may think at this point) that reside within the Unova region.
After the speech, N, an unknown Trainer (for now), will appraoch and battle you.
________________________ | BOSS: PKMN Trainer N \ |_________________________\__________________________________________________ | Pokemon: Purrloin (Lv. 7) Dark | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Purrloin has type weaknesses to Bug and Fighting, with a Psychic immunity.| | Not like it matters much. Unless you've been doing some serious grinding, | | you won't have a move of any of these types. If your Pokemon has a type | | move of its type (ie. Snivy with Vine Whip), use it, as it gets a 50% | | power bonus (called STAB). So, this is basically a slightly-harder | | version of your first battle. | |____________________________________________________________________________|
After defeating N, he'll speak with you for a bit and leave. Cheren soon follows suit.
After regaining control, you can go to the northwestern house and speak with the man on the second floor to receive a Poke Ball. That's pretty much it. On this same floor is a girl who can play Pokemon rock-paper-scissors with you. In the northeastern house, you can speak with the musicians to add their musical instruments to the Accumula Town song, until you leave.
Whenever you're done, return to and heal at the Pokemon Center. Then go to the northwestern corner of town, and continue west onto Route 2.
Route 2
____________________________________________________________________________ | Pokemon | Pokemon Type | Level Range | Encounter Method | |----------------+----------------------+---------------+--------------------| | Lillipup | Normal | 4 to 7 | Grass | | Patrat | Normal | 4 to 7 | Grass | | Purrloin | Dark | 4 to 7 | Grass | | Audino | Normal | 4 to 7 | Grass (shaking) | |============================================================================| | Trainers' Pokemon: Patrat Lv. 7 | | Purrloin Lv. 7 | | Lillipup Lv. 7 | |____________________________________________________________________________|
Some stuff on the Trainers' Pokemon section. This section will list, and will ONLY list, the Pokemon each Trainer has. There are no names, no cash info, no strategies. Just the Pokemon and the level. Each individual line will list one Trainer, unless otherwise noted. (I did the same system for the HG/SS guide, and only used the "same battle" note once, and that was due to a double battle.) Finally, I try to make the Trainers be listed in the order you find and battle them, or at least as listed in the FAQ.
After walking a couple of steps past the gatehouse, you'll get an Xtranceiver from your mother, who soon shows up. She'll give you the Running Shoes. By holding B, you can move faster. Unfortunately, unlike HG/SS, they don't have the always-on function you can set, so prepare to hold B a lot. Your mother soon leaves.
Onto the Route! After receiving the Running Shoes, go into the nearby patch of grass and grab the Potion (items are STILL denoted by a Pokeball on the screen). You'll soon run into a Youngster.
Defeat him and his Patrat and go east to battle a Lass. Defeat her and continue to the east. You'll find some grass. Travel northward and battle the last Trainer on the Route. After that battle, go east and up the hill, then south. You'll find a Poke Ball and a Potion near the end of the path. Go back down the hill and then north. You'll soon find and battle Bianca.
_____________________________ | BOSS: PKMN Trainer Bianca \ |______________________________\_____________________________________________ | Pokemon: Lillipup (Lv. 6) Normal | | Snivy [if you chose Tepig] (Lv. 7) Grass <--, | | Tepig [if you chose Oshawott] (Lv. 7) Fire <--+- Only one. | | Oshawott [if you chose Snivy] (Lv. 7) Water <--' | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Lillipup are weak to Fighting and immune to Ghost. This Pokemon shouldn't | | cause that much trouble for you though. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have | | any form of advantage over your starter. | | | | Snivy are weak to Flying, Ice, Fire, Bug, and Poison. By now, your Tepig | | should have Ember, so you can start using it on Snivy. | | | | Tepig is weak to Rock, Ground, and Water. Your starter should have a | | Water move by now, if you fight Tepig in this battle, so use it. | | | | Oshawott is weak to Grass and Electric, and -- guess what? -- Snivy | | should have a Grass move by now. So use it. | | | | Recommendations: Your starter at Lv. 10+ will be able to solo it. | |____________________________________________________________________________|
After the battle, continue north into Striation City.
Striation City
At the southernmost portion of the city, you can find a gap in the trees. If you go along it, you'll be able to grab an X Speed.
If you go to easternmost buildings and go up the southernmost east set of stairs, you can speak with a man inside. He will give you a Great Ball. This ball has a 1.5x catch rate versus the 1.0x of the Poke Ball. The Ultra Ball, an item later on for buying, has 2.0x. Then the next I recommend would be the Dusk Ball (4.0x at night), which is the best unless you count the Master Ball (256.0x catch rate; more or less 100%). So, yeah, food for thought.
If you now leave and go down the alley and go in the small alley between the building you was just in and the trees, you'll find a man who'll give you the Dusk Ball. Well, speak of the devil! Anyhow, this ball has a 4.0x catch rate versus the normal Poke Ball (2.7x versus the Great Ball), but only at night or in a cave or in another poorly-light area.
Let's go visit the Pokemon Center now and heal up our Pokemon. Buy some items if desired. Leave and go into the building west of the Pokemon Center. This is a Pokemon School. Inside, a brown-haired boy can quiz you. The questions, I believe, are about statuses. Anyhow, the correct answers are the top one, and the the bottom one. You'll be given a Full Heal, which heals all statuses (except Pokerus). You will also find Cheren by the chalkboard. Speak with him to battle ... inside the school. (Didn't he learn anything from MY room!?)
_____________________________ | BOSS: PKMN Trainer Cheren \ |______________________________\_____________________________________________ | Pokemon: Snivy [if you chose Oshawott] (Lv. 11) Grass <--, | | Tepig [if you chose Snivy] (Lv. 11) Fire <--+- Only one. | | Oshawott [if you chose Tepig] (Lv. 11) Water <--' | | Purrloin (Lv. 8) Dark | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Snivy is weak to Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, and Bug. You are unlikely to | | have any of these moves. I WOULD say to use your non-Normal move, but, | | considering everything, it would only do 75% of the normal damage. So use | | your Normal move. | | | | Tepig is weak to Water, Ground, and Rock. As I stated above, it would be | | better to use your Normal move. | | | | Oshawott is weak to Grass and Electric. Again, use your Normal move. | | | | Purrloin is weak to Fighting and Bug. Your starter will work here. | | | | Recommendations: Your starter at Lv. 11+ will do fine. You may need to | | heal it, though. | |____________________________________________________________________________|
After the battle, Cheren will give you 3 Oran Berries. These items will restores 10 HP of a Pokemon when held in-battle when the Pokemon goes below 50% HP. You can also use it immediately in-battle.
Now, leave the school, heal at the Pokemon Center, and head west, past the school. You'll find a fountain. Go south and across the bridge to find a Great Ball.
Next, ignore the Gym and go east to the Dreamyard.
Dreamyard
____________________________________________________________________________ | Pokemon | Pokemon Type | Level Range | Encounter Method | |----------------+----------------------+---------------+--------------------| | Not available at the moment. | |============================================================================| | Trainers' Pokemon: Purrloin Lv. 8 (x2) | | Patrat Lv. 7 (x2), Lillipup Lv. 7 | |____________________________________________________________________________|
Another thing on the Trainers' Pokemon. If I say (x2) or something, that means the Trainer has two Pokemon of the same species and level. They don't necessarily come out at the same or have the same moves/stats/etc. An unstated multiplier means that there is just one of that species and level.
Anyhow, firstly go forward and battle the Lass. After this battle, take notice of the tree blocking the way north. This is a Cut tree. They will remain in your path until you use the HM01 move, Cut, on them out of battle. You'll need the HM01 and the Trio Badge to do this, though -- and you have neither. So ignore it and keep going forward to battle the Youngster.
After the second battle, speak with the dark-haired person, and you'll receive a simian Pokemon based on your starter, assuming you have an empty party slot. You'll have to return to the Pokemon Center and put a Pokemon in storage if you lack an empty slot.
O============O--------------------O---------O----------O | Starter | Pokemon Received | Type | Level | O============O--------------------O---------O----------O | Snivy | Panpour | Water | 10 | | Tepig | Pansage | Grass | 10 | | Oshawott | Pansear | Fire | 10 | O============O--------------------O---------O----------O
You'll be given a chance to nickname the Pokemon. Next, go north and near the orange traffic cone to find an X Defend. That'll be it for now; return to Striation City.
Striation City
Return to the Pokemon Center and heal. Then go to the green-haired guy in the Gym's doorway, that building east of the Pokemon Center. He will speak with you, then go into the Gym. You should follow suit.
Striation Gym
____________________________________________________________________________ | Pokemon | Pokemon Type | Level Range | Encounter Method | |----------------+----------------------+---------------+--------------------| | No wild Pokemon can be found in this location. | |============================================================================| | Trainers' Pokemon: Lillipup Lv. 11 | | Patrat Lv. 10, Purrloin Lv. 11 | |____________________________________________________________________________|
Once you enter and take a step or two forward, a man will notice you and give you a Fresh Water. This is an item that heals 50 HP, quite a gift at this point in-game. This will happen at all eight of the Unova Gyms.
The puzzle is like this: there will be a Pokemon type imaged on the curtain. Of the three types below it (Fire, Water, and Grass), you are to step on the panel with the type that the curtain's type is weak against.
For this first room, the curtain is Fire. Thusly, step on the Water panel to open up the next room. Go forward some to battle a Waiter.
As for the second curtain, after the battle, go forward. The curtain shows Water. Step on the Grass panel and go forward for a battle against a Waitress.
In the next room, you'll see Grass. Step on the Fire panel and then go forward to find Cilan, one of the Gym Leaders here, alongside Chili and Cress. This is the first time ever in Pokemon that there are three Leaders for Gym; luckily, you only need to battle one of them.
This is determined by your starter. If it is Snivy, you'll fight Chili; if it is Tepig, you'll fight Cress; if it is Oshawott, you'll fight Cilan. They'll determine who will fight you.
A good strategy is to use your starter to take out their lead Pokemon, then switch to your simian Pokemon to deal with your opponent's. Just saying. Speak with the Gym Leader to begin.
______________________________________ | BOSS: Gym Leader Chili/Cress/Cilan \ |_______________________________________\____________________________________ | Chili's Pokemon: Lillipup (Lv. 12) Normal | | Pansear (Lv. 14) Fire | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Cress's Pokemon: Lillipup (Lv. 12) Normal | | Panpour (Lv. 14) Water | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Cilan's Pokemon: Lillipup (Lv. 12) Normal | | Pansage (Lv. 14) Grass | |============================================================================| | Lillipup is weak to Fighting and immune to Ghost. Regardless, as I said | | earlier, use your starter against the lead Pokemon, so as to protect your | | simian Pokemon from the usually-higher-leveled simian of the other person.| | | | Pansear, Panpour, and Pansage should be dealt with using Panpour, | | Pansage, and Pansear, respectively. Again, your simian will have a type | | advantage over your opponent's, so just use it. | | | | Recommendations: Your starter at Lv. 12+, and your simian at Lv. 10+. | |____________________________________________________________________________|
After the battle, you'll receive the Trio Badge, which permits the use of HM01 (Cut) out of battle. You'll also get TM83 (Work Up). Speaking of TMs, they work differently than the TMs of the previous games. They now have an unlimited number of uses, much like HMs. Pretty great.
Exit the Gym when ready.
